We all face tough decisions from time to time. Luckily they start off rather small – “which school subjects should I choose to give me university exemption”; “who should I ask to the matric dance?”; “what should I do with the rest of my life”. The last one I am still asking and thankfully I don’t have to answer that one right now…
But that is exactly my point. So often we feel like we have to make a decision, there and then. If we are clever about it, we weigh up the pros and cons, chat to a trusted friend or two, we even pray about it.
But what happens when you have done all of the above and you are still unsure?
I have come the conclusion that we don’t have to choose between one thing or another. Sometime waiting can be the alternative you need right in that moment. This is really hard for me, I am a bit of a type A personality – I believe making things happen. I quote things such as “Never allow waiting to become a habit, live your dreams and take risks.” or “Just make a decision and move forward.” I am the type person who don’t take Sunday afternoon naps because I feel it is time wasted. Waiting does not come naturally to me at all. I’m better since I have had kids, but I am still horribly impatient.
Tough decisions? Learn from the Lioness
I was recently asked to watch a documentary about lions – any documentary or programme really. The purpose was to watch the lioness at ease with her strength and at rest with her power. To see her confidence in her own beauty, not concerned with cellulite or wondering whether her jeans made her look fat. Poise, confident, powerful.
Do you know what I noticed?
I noticed her willingness to wait for her prey. Waiting confidently, alert to what is happening and seeing every movement around her. I learned that waiting isn’t a passive activity, it gives you the opportunity to prepare, to rest and to be strong when the time is right.
Do yourself a favour, especially if you’re going through a tough time. Watch the lioness and learn!
