All of a sudden, it feels like we have moved from autumn into winter! I have this pressing desire to share my super cheap fashion hack to keep warm this winter!
Naturally, it is best to recognise the fact, that I’m no fashion blogger.
Comfort over style, let’s be practical! That really is the kind of girl, I am!
Since we’re being honest…
Let’s chat about our South African winters! They are pretty harsh. Not because the temperatures reach incredible low, but because we are ill-equipped to deal with the cold weather.
Secondly, our go-to fashion hack for winter is to simply layer up. Followed by loads of delayering because our days remain pretty warm, even in winter.
I (kinda) know what I’m talking about.
After school, I travelled to the UK on a working holiday visa. I spent two winters in the UK and a glorious summer (that latest all of two weeks.)
Fact remains, houses were warm and toasty. Central heating and insulation made the winters cosy. Warm jackets of all sorts meant that you wore your short-sleeved tops or t-shirts, a light cardigan (if you’d like) and a proper jacket that protected you from the cold temperatures.
Our South African houses aren’t fitted with proper indoor heating.
We live in a house with metal sheeting. It’s awesome to listen to the rain trickling on the roof, but in winter it is freezing! Sure, we have a fireplace, which is brilliant for evenings and over the weekend, but getting out of bed in the mornings remain a painful exercise!
Winter Fashion = The Layered Look
If you are anything like me, you probably also go to work with four to five layers of clothing and by 10:30 am, you find yourself in a predicament where you need remove at least two of the above-mentioned layers.
For the most part – our days remain sunny and warm. Unless you live in the Western Cape or Free State of course! (In which case, you’ll really benefit from my winter hack to keep warm!)
Keep Warm this winter (when it’s needed) in our South African Climate
It is so simple!
Leg Warmers for your Arms
If you want to wear them on your legs too, that perfectly fine! I, however, love wearing leg warmers to warm my hands, palms and arms – all the way to my armpits (if I am being dramatic) or otherwise up to just above my elbow.
The beauty in wearing leg warmers means there’s no need for gloves! Can you tell I am not a fan of gloves?
Another perk is that your toe-less sock is snuggly wrapped around your arm, which means, even if there’s a chilly wind blowing (up your sleeve), you are sorted!
The best part of wearing leg warmers is that when it is time to get rid of some layers, they are pretty easy to remove! No need to go to the loo, take off three layers, only to put two of the three layers back on again!
Do you realise how little space they take up in your handbag?
People think I am odd because I love my leg-warmers! I really do love them, but I love keeping warm!
I wonder why all shops aren’t filled with a dedicated shelf of leg-warmers! How wonderful would life be, if we had options! Shelves filled with different varieties, colours and textures of only leg warmers!
In closing, I recently miss places (perhaps even lost) my good old faithful leg warmers. Needless to say, after turning my cupboards upside down, I went straight to the shops in search of a new pair!
My keep warm routine was severely disturbed because I couldn’t find a pair! Sadly, asking the shop attendant was also pretty useless – probably because most of them weren’t even alive in the 80s!
I think it is time to start a Keep Warm Leg Warmer campaign!
If you like my style (thinking). Tag me on Facebook or Instagram and tell me where I can find some additional pairs of leg warmers. Simple type, @thecuriouswildflower and use the #keepwarmlegwarmers in your post!
If you think I am mad... Let me know in the comments below, how you keep warm in winter. (Subtle warning, they better be good!)
